RICE BRAN OIL – R & D OPPORTUNITY
Traditionally, potato chips and even French fries have been fried in rice bran oil throughout various Asian countries, such as Japan due to the flavour and also the oxidative stability that Rice Bran Oil offers.
In the U.S., rice bran oil is currently being used in up-scale snack food production and various types of restaurants.
As a large producer of rice, India should be interested in exploiting the potentials of rice bran oil. While some worthwhile initiatives have been made in the field, adequate R&D efforts should be put forth to develop market friendly rice bran oil based products, so as to create greater growth opportunities in the field.
This article discusses some of the potential areas of applications of rice bran oil.
FUEL CELLS- GLOBAL TRENDS
For product launches within the next few years, cost and technical issues will pose significant barriers,' says ABI Research (Oyster Bay, NY). `Initial consumer fuel cell products will focus on stationary power generation and portable electronics. However, they may not function as well as the power systems they are replacing, yet will be more expensive”.
Still, there is huge potential as those problems are overcome, analysts say.
A study by Price water house Coopers (PwC) estimates that the global market for fuel cells will reach $35 billion by 2011.
An ABI study is somewhat more conservative, estimating the market at $19 billion to $35 billion by 2013. But ABI says the market will still be `nominal' in 2004.
Growth will be dependent on improvements to the technology and the increased availability of hydrogen and methanol fuel, it says.
